Roger Peyrefitte
(August 17, 1907 - November 5, 2000)
French writer and diplomat, born in Castres. He died in Paris. Paris/New York. With the death of the French writer Roger Peyrefitte, also the transatlantic cooperation ha lost a loyal friend. The writer died on November 5th in Paris, at the age of 93 years. He lost after a long fight with the Parkinson's disease, explained a spokesman for the circle of friends of Peyrefitte in the French capital. The author, who was born on August 17, 1907 in Castres, has made his international breakthrough as a young diplomat with his novel "Secret Friendships".

Many of his books were published also in the USA. Peyrefitte belonged to the friends of Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Arno Breker, Ernst Fuchs, and many others. To the important publications belong the trilogy about the life and mission of Alexander the Great, a book about Charles de Gaulle, as well as novels with contemporary, entertaining background.

French writer and diplomat. His family were prosperous landowners in Castres in the southwest of France. He received a pious education at the Lazarist Collège St Benoit. He then attended the Jesuit Collège de Caousou at Audouane, followed by the Collège de Caousou at Toulouse, and the Lycée de Foix and the Faculty of Letters at the University of Toulouse where he majored in language and literature. He then went to Paris and acquired the diploma of Ecole Libre des Sciences Politiques in the diplomatic section.

His career in diplomacy began at the Ministre des Affaires Etrangères in 1931. In 1933 he became the first secretary at Athens, and in 1938 he entered the administration centrale and was attached to the Ministre des Affaires Etrangères in Paris. In 1943 he became assistant to Ferdinand de Briton, the representative of the government to the German occupying authorities. He was removed from office in February 1945 because of his collaboration. The discharge was revoked in 1960 and his diplomatic status was restored in 1962.

He became famous with his first novel, Les Amitiés particulières in 1944. The story deals with gay love affairs at a French boarding school, and appears to draw on Roger Peyrefitte's own experiences. He never had the same degree of success with his other novels. Some continued the theme of gay love affairs. Others were studies of French society and often portrayed famous people is a bad light. Cruel portraits included Julien Green, Françoise Sagan, Alain Delon, Françoise Mauriac, André Gide, and Henri Montherlant. In 1964 a literary dispute developed between Roger Peyrefitte and Françoise Mauriac over the making of a film of Les Amitiés particulières. The argument split the Paris literary world and led to many resignations from the Société des Gens de Lettres. His Les Clefs de Saint-Pierre, (1955) was described as 'lewdly libellous' by the Vatican. In 1958 the Italian government began criminal proceedings against him on the grounds that he libelled Pope Pius IX in an article in a Rome newspaper. In 1965 a judge ordered a page to be cut from Les Juifs after the Rothschild family took legal action. Les Américains, (1968), portrayed Marlene Dietrich as a supporter of Hitler and led to her winning libel damages against Roger Peyrefitte. His Propos Secrets, (1977) involved him in a series of libel actions. He also wrote historical novels including L'Exilé de Capri, (1959) about Baron Jacques d'Adelsward Fersen in Capri.

In an interview conducted in 1976 and published in the Gay Sunshine Journal in 1979 (issue 42/43), Roger Peyrefitte claimed: "I am the most well-known defender of homosexual rights in France. That is certain. Often they call me 'The Pope of Homosexuality.' That's because I am the author of The Keys of St. Peter and The Knights of Malta, the most important books by a contemporary writer on the Catholic Church."

In November 1992 he was made to look foolish when invited onto the French television book programme, Ex Libris, to defend his two-volume biography Voltaire et Fredédéric II in which Fredédéric II sodomised Voltaire. The whole story was treated as preposterous, but the book became a best-seller.

Books: Les Amitiés particulieres (1944), Les Amours singuliéres (1949), Les ambassades (1951), La Fin des ambassades (1953), Du Vésuve a Etna (1953), Les Clefs de Saint-Pierre (1955), Jeunes Proies (1956), Les Chevaliers de Malte (1957), L'Exilé de Capri (1959), Les Fils de la lumiere (1961), La Nature du Prince (1963), Les Juifs (1965), Notre Amour (1967), Les Américains (1968), Des Français (1970), La Muse garçonniere (1973), Propos Secrets (1977), L'Enfant de Coeur (1978), Roy (1979), La Soutane Rouge (1983), Voltaire et Fredédéric II (1992)

David Pichler
(September 3, 1968)
American diver, who was born in Butler, Pennsylvania. Pichler has been diving since 1983.

David Pichler became the third gay male Olympic diver to come out of the closet. Like those who proceeded him, it was not a pleasant task. Not the only diver to have his private life made public, he was faced with accusations from his coach that his lover abused him. After a scuffle aboard a plane in 1996 that led to restraining orders, harassment and what Pichler called "a nightmare," the whole country found out that another great diver is gay.

Pichler came out, re-thought his training, and chose another openly gay diver, Patrick Jeffrey, as his coach. The seven-time national champion from Butler, PA was also forced to come out to his family and re-think his life. Pichler signed a two-year contract with Speedo and continued to compete.

Pichler and Mark Ruiz won the synchronized platform final at the FINA-USA Diving Grand Prix in May 2000. Pichler and Ruiz scored 301.26 points, ahead of 298.50 for Australians Mathew Helm and Robert Newbery.

Competing in his final Olympics in Sydney 2000, Pichler was elected team captain. The 32-year-old  had an uneven competition. In his individual event Pichler finished ninth in the 10-meter platform. In two synchronized events he and Troy Dumais finished just two points from a bronze medal in the 3-meter springboard; while he and Mark Ruiz were a disappointing seventh in the 10-meter platform
